“And when we consider that other theory of the natural philosophers, that all other earthly hues... all these are but subtle deceits, not actually inherent in substances, but only laid on from without...” In the above quote from Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, the character Ishmael ruminates on the layered nature of the universe, that all the color humans see are illusions stacked on a blank, white void. I’m not sure that I agree, but the idea of multiple layers of reality, along with the novel Moby-Dick, haunts me.
